How frequently should you replace your home furnishings?

A person’s home is their sanctuary. Sitting on a saggy sofa, sleeping on an unsupportive mattress, or seeing unsightly faded curtains can make for a less than pleasant experience. Knowing when to replace your home furnishings will help you sleep, relax, stay healthy and enjoy your time in your home.

Living and dining room seating– An average sofa and dining chairs will remain in good condition for 7-10 years. You will know your sofa/seating needs replacement when it tends to sag in the center and provides little support. If you can feel the base of a chair when you sit on your chair cushion, your cushions need to be replaced. Replacement cushions are available through leading foam manufactures and can be custom-made.

Curtaining – The ideal time to replace your curtains is when your curtains start to fade or when they bring in more light than they used to. The level of fading will depend on the quality of the fabric, its color, and the level of sun exposure your curtains receive. Investing in two types of curtains, one for summer and one for winter will help you maintain your drapes as well as reduce their wear and tear.

Mattress – As per the National Sleep Foundation, you should change your mattress every 7-10 years. Your mattress guarantee will also indicate how long your mattress will last depending on its material. Changing your mattress is known to improve sleep quality and reduce allergy symptoms as new mattresses provide better support and have no dust mites, mold, or mildew.
